Moving guide

Moving home broadband without line rental

Moving home is the right moment to rethink broadband. Do not automatically move an old copper package if full fibre, cable or 5G is available at the new address.

Key points

  • Check the exact new postcode and flat number with several providers before moving a contract.
  • Ask whether the move restarts your minimum term or adds fees.
  • If the new address has full fibre or cable, switching may suit you better than a straight transfer.
  • 5G home broadband can cover a gap if an installation date slips.

Check the new postcode first

Broadband availability can change from one building to the next. Before you move a contract, check the exact new postcode and flat number with several providers.

If the new address has full fibre, you may be able to upgrade rather than simply transfer a slower package. If fixed-line install dates are awkward, 5G home broadband may cover the gap.

Questions for your current provider

  • Can the existing contract be moved to the new address?
  • Will the move restart the minimum term?
  • What happens if the same package is not available at the new address?
  • Are there moving, router delivery or engineer fees?
  • Can you leave without penalty if the provider cannot supply the new home?

Move, upgrade or switch?

If your current deal is cheap and the provider can supply the new property, moving it may be simple. If the new address has better full fibre or cable options, switching may give you faster broadband and remove legacy line-rental assumptions at the same time.

Installation planning

Fixed-line broadband can involve engineer availability, landlord permission, external cabling and router delivery. Book early if you depend on broadband for work. Keep a mobile hotspot or 5G home broadband option in mind if the installation date slips.
